The research mission of the Integrative Cardiovascular and Exercise Physiology Laboratory
The dual research mission of the ICEPL is to improve cardiovascular health and physical performance in all people. We approach this mission in many ways. For example, we perform basic physiological research in humans to understand how the cardiovascular system changes with aging or with certain disease states, such as hypertension. We also test novel exercise and physical activity interventions for improving cardiovascular health and sport performance.
Below, you can find recent publications from our laboratory as well as a list of our ongoing research studies. Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any interest in participating in our research!

High-Resistance Inspiratory Muscle Strength Training
We are recruiting participants for a 6-week trial testing a time-efficient breathing intervention, called high-resistance inspiratory muscle strength training (IMST), for lowering blood pressure. We are looking for generally healthy adults who have a systolic blood pressure (the top number in a blood pressure reading) of 120 mmHg or greater.
Inspiratory Muscle Warm Up
We are recruiting participants for a research study investigating how a breathing warm up influences running performance. We are seeking volunteers aged 18-45 years old who have run at least 15 miles per week for the past 3 months.
Weekend warrior
We are recruiting participants for a study comparing VO2max and measures of cardiovascular health across adults 40 years of age or older who perform varied physical activity patterns. Healthy inactive adults, active adults, and master athletes are encouraged to participate. The study requires two visits to the Integrative Cardiovascular and Exercise Physiology Laboratory.
Assisted Reproductive Technologies
We are recruiting participants for a research study comparing cardiovascular function in adults conceived through assisted reproductive technology (ex. in vitro fertilization) to adults conceived conventionally. The study involves one visit to the Integrative Cardiovascular and Exercise Physiology Laboratory.
